Check out the ABC story :
Geologists find bacteria that takes traces of gold and turns them into nuggets

After years of careful planning and experimentation three ground-breaking papers now reveal the biochemistry of how the aurophilic (i.e., gold-loving) bacterium Cupriavidus metallidurans detected to date on natural gold particles from sites on four continents, deals with gold toxicity and produces gold nanoparticles, the building blocks of secondary gold, in the processes.

Great effort by an Australo-North American research team just published in Minerals: Cupriavidus metallidurans produces platinum nanoparticles. This study provides insights into mechanisms of platinum biomineralisation responsible for the formation of secondary platinum nuggets

Found this add by CAMECA for their NanoSIMS 50L in a recent edition of elements and thought, ‘wow they are the NanoSIMS data from our recent paper in Nature Geoscience’:

Congratulations to Sahar Saad Shar for being admitted to the degree of Doctor of Philosophy after her thesis titled ‘Mobility of platinum and gold in the environment and the roles of microbes’, was accepted. This is a great milestone and excellent achievement and the group congratulates Sahar and wishes here all the best for the future.

Congratulations to PhD student Jared Castle: Winning NIFS Best Chapter in a book award for 2017 and a presentation award at the FACTA conference. A great achievement and well deserved!
